Beloved, as millions celebrate Halloween, children go door to door asking, “TRICK OR TREAT?” Yet behind the costumes, candy, and playful images of death lies a far greater ETERNAL reality! Since Adam's fall, humanity has been under the curse of sin and death. The greatest trick ever played upon mankind was Satan's deception in the Garden of Eden: “You will not surely die” (Genesis 3:4). But Almighty God had declared the truth! Sin brought spiritual death, separation from God, and ultimately physical death into His creation (Romans 5:12). Ephesians 2:1–3 reveals that apart from Christ, humanity is spiritually dead in trespasses and sins, walking according to this fallen world and under the influence of the prince of the power of the air. Satan's great deception is that mankind can live independently of Almighty God, enjoy the pleasures of sin, and somehow escape its ETERNAL consequences! Yet Scripture declares, “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). No costume can hide our sin, no human righteousness can remove our guilt, and no earthly pleasure can overcome the grave!
The greatest trick ever played upon mankind was Satan's deception in the Garden of Eden: “You will not surely die” (Genesis 3:4). But Almighty God had declared the truth! Sin brought spiritual death, separation from God, and ultimately physical death into His creation (Romans 5:12).
BUT GOD! (Ephesians 2:4). In His great mercy and ETERNAL LOVE, Almighty God has provided the greatest gift mankind could ever receive—not a temporary treat, but ETERNAL LIFE through JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD! The ETERNALLY RIGHTEOUS Son of God entered our fallen world, bore our sins upon the cross, died in our place, and triumphantly rose from the grave, never to die again! Through His finished work, Almighty God offers complete forgiveness of sins, reconciliation with Himself, and ETERNAL LIFE to all who receive His Son by faith (John 1:12; Ephesians 1:7; John 5:24). What a glorious contrast: Satan offers the deceptive pleasures of sin that end in death, but JESUS CHRIST offers the FREE GIFT of ETERNAL LIFE that can NEVER end! Romans 6:23 concludes, “but the free gift of God is ETERNAL LIFE in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This Halloween, remember that the greatest question is not “Trick or Treat?” but “DEATH OR LIFE?” And the greatest news ever proclaimed is that JESUS CHRIST HAS CONQUERED SIN AND DEATH, AND ALL WHO BELIEVE IN HIM HAVE PASSED FROM DEATH UNTO ETERNAL LIFE! (John 5:24; 1 John 5:11–13).
The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand! Maranatha!
David
